Hurricanes

Some people are like hurricanes.
They destroy anyone who gets too close to them
but use their winds to pull you in
all the while leaving tragedy and pain
behind in their path.
Other people are like storm chasers.
Hurricanes don't scare them,
they seek out their depth.
They're drawn to the complexity and
the impending self-destruction.

You were like a hurricane that I
couldn't help but try to chase.
If only to spend some time in the eye,
the calm of the storm.
To see the gentle side of a man
who would only leave me behind.
To see the humanity and
humility of someone who
So often tries to outrun his pain.
Only to find that the more he runs,
the more people like me,
Can't run fast enough to catch up,
Instead I end up, caught up,
In the aftermath of his storm,
And in the mist of
All his self-sabotage.

And then I find myself alone
Standing in his wake.
My heart feeling just as tumultuous
As the hurricane of a man,
I tried to chase.
And just as damaged as his heart,
the one I dared to try to hold.
