Better as Friends

Sometimes I think about our first kiss

how time was suspended as we

breathed in the same air.

My body flushed

with a warmth as unfamiliar

as the lips pressed against mine.

I fell into you

stumbled into a feeling

I may not have been ready for.

A wish falling into my well

you plunged into me unaware

of what was brooding internally.

And there was a rift in the timeline

as we unpaused and

the intimacy was lost.

What I'd give to be

enveloped in that excitement

with you again.

Before the moment my fear

leaped out of my throat at you and

you decided we'd be better as friends.
